lately with Ellie

If you follow me on Instagram (@megbriggs), you've probably seen most of these pictures. I love the faces this girl makes! She has so much personality already. I can't believe how big she is! I love this stage! Don't get me wrong, I love the shlumpy newborn phase, but I also love to see her do big baby things like holding her head up and trying to roll over and smiling and cooing. The cooing! So adorable!! She loves to chat with us. Especially with Ryan and Brinley. Right now, mama provides the goods and helps her when she is sad and tired.

Can you believe she is 2 months next week??

Thanksgiving: more pictures than words

We had the unique opportunity this year to spend our holiday week with both families. Ryan's parents moved back to North Carolina this year and it is a new adventure for us to juggle both families when we visit, but we couldn't be happier about it.

What can be said about Thanksgiving?
we drove in a Cadillac
we slept
we ate
we laughed
we ate some more
we (ryan, his dad, and my dad) golfed
we cried
and then we ate even more
we shopped
we talked
we (Ellie) had many diaper blow-outs
we took family pictures
we (Brinley) had plenty of bedtime meltdowns
we (Brinley) got bit by Penny, that scoundrel
we drove some more
we finally made it home
we (me...) did plenty of loads of laundry
we (me...) unpacked our suitcases
and now we are adjusting to Ryan's finals regime

Enjoy the pictures!

We can't believe Thanksgiving is already over! Only a couple more weeks left in the semester, and then we will be making the drive back up to Charlotte for Christmas. Lots of family to see. Lots to look forward to. And lots of much deserved R&R for all of us :-)

Sick Week

How did we scrape by for 3 years before Brinley got the stomach bug? Either way, I am grateful she was 3 before it hit. That girl has good aim :-)

The story goes like this. It was playgroup at the park day, so of course I was running around like a crazy person trying to get everyone ready and out the door by 10am. I was stressed. There was a time when both Ellie and Brinley were screaming. Brinley didn't seem completely off that morning, but she didn't really touch her breakfast. Which then made me threaten her with no park and basically force her to eat in order for us to leave. This girl will eat breakfast and no joke within 35 seconds, she is telling me she is hungry again. It gets old.

So there we are. At the park. Thankfully, Ellie passed out in her car seat on the way over. Brinley was her spunky self at the park, for a total of 5 minutes. I saw her in the distance struggling to unzip her hoodie so I ran over before she had a chance to break the zipper and then...it happened.

I had no idea what to do. I just watched her throw up. She has never done that before so of course, I had no idea what to do. Then, my mama bear instincts kicked in and I basically had to stiff arm these kids at the park to get out of the WAY! Can't you see someone is puking their guts up? GET BACK!"

I was hoping it was a one chance occurrence  But no. Until about 4am the next day, she threw up everything she ate. Which was a total of only 4 times.

Our 24-hour bug looked like this:

movie number one: Bolt

movie two after nap: Toy Story 3

she couldn't sit still. Poor girl.

a day of throw up and constant nursing. I looked like craaaap-ola.

I hate the stomach bug and I hope it never enters our house again! Who knows where it came from, but it only hit Brinley. By some miracle the rest of us dodged a bullet. I was anxious all week about the possibility of Ellie getting sick, and myself getting sick and having to take care of the kids by myself. I kind of just want to delete that week from my life and never remember it again! I am slowly learning that moving into a 2 bedroom apartment was a bad idea. My semi-claustrophobia is setting in. I feel like we are stepping on each other! But, we only have to wait until May. Then who knows where we will be moving to next!

Working Out

Well, it's that time again.

Losing the dreaded baby weight.

Time has flown by and my 6 week appointment is Monday. Am I crazy to admit my weight now with the holidays coming? Or more determined to not eat everything my eyes see? I'm not sure. Maybe if it gets bad enough, I'll stop posting! haha

And being inspired by my girlfriend, I am going to be honest. And hold myself to that standard. Last week, I "jogged" on the treadmill for 10 minutes and did the elliptical for 5 minutes. I was wiped. I think I can push myself more now because I learned that I MUST feed Ellie before I do any sort of jogging. And, I need to wear 2 sports bras. Holy mama I looked awkward with my hand on my chest while jogging! It felt good to sweat! It felt really good! It is much easier working out without a monstrous belly in my way. After I got back, I had Ryan write down my body measurements and so I can see how far I have come in a few months. Weight is one thing, but I think seeing where your body is shrinking is very rewarding.

My goals:
1. Obviously, to get back down to my pre-baby weight. But even more? Firm up. My weight before kids was only 5 pounds lighter than my pre-pregnancy weight but dang my body looked much different. I lost all the weight and a bit more after Brinley, but I still felt....soft. My body just wasn't toned. Somehow, I lost the weight by itself. I barely worked out after I had Brinley. It took basically the whole year to get there, but I did get there. This time around, I HAVE to look banging at Ryan's graduation. So I am giving myself 6 months. Hello, a wife of an attorney and not just a law student? I need to step it up haha.

2. I have decided to do 30 minutes of exercise 3-4 days a week, or more if I can get out of the house. We are lucky to have a great gym center in our complex and it is close, so basically what I'm saying, there is NO excuse.

3. Eating better. I love snacks. I love sugar. I love cookies. Ryan will be the first to admit it. I need a treat a day, but I don't need 4 cookies. Only 1. This will be my hardest battle. After I get into better shape, I'll start dropping calories too, but with exclusively breastfeeding, I need to be careful about that.

4. I am already doing great at drinking tons of water and mostly water. But now, ONLY water. No more diet cokes for me.

5. And a personal goal is to stop putting myself and my body image down. My friend has inspired me to stop doing that! People have been telling me how good I look and I respond back with something negative instead of saying thank you. I freaking had a BABY. Why can't my mind agree with my body that you can't have a baby, and gain 50 pounds, and drop it instantly? It is going to take time and lots of work to get back to where I was before having Ellie, but first I need to have good self confidence. I won't succeed if I keep putting myself down.

Starting weight as of November 16:
150.5

So bare with me. I need encouragement.

Updates on Everyone

I forget sometimes that this blog is a family blog, not just a Brinley and Ellie blog. It is about time I do a good family update on all that has been going on with us!

Ryan:
stud muffin

This guy is so busy. All. The. Time! His days start at 5:30am and end when Ellie is in bed for the night, which usually lands somewhere between 10:30pm and midnight. He goes to work for 3 hours before his classes start and is usually home from everything by 5:30pm. He has a two night a week night class that ends at 7pm, but thankfully, he hasn't had regular classes in the past month so that has been very helpful on me. I haaaate night classes. It sends me into a frenzy. My mental capacity can only handle parenting until 5pm.

School is going great, at least that's what he tells me! He is taking 5 classes and fortunately, only 3 have finals. We can't really believe that finals week (which is really 2 weeks long), is looming over us again (starts after Thanksgiving) and that the semester is over less than a month away. He writes his last final on December 11th!! Eeeks! He is still extremely busy with his school work but since he has been waking up earlier to get more done, he doesn't really do as much homework late into the night anymore.

It amazes me the type of schedule he keeps and all that he has to do during the day. He works 20-25 hours a week, is a full-time law student in his third year, writes for 2 law journals, actively searches for jobs, and his recent hat, Elders Quorum First Counselor. We really try and make time for each other but now with a newborn constantly needing our attention, our nights are full of, get that baby asleep so WE can sleep! We are looking forward to the holidays so we can get away on a couple of dates!!

He helps me out a ton with doing my grocery store runs and taking Brinley on dates a couple times a week. We sometimes hit the park up after work on days when Brinley and I have the car. We pick Ryan up and head over top play for 30 minutes. Brinley loves it when they go on grocery store dates, or picking up take-out for dinner, or running over to the mail box, or on their adventure walks around the complex. She loves her daddy so much and I am so grateful for the time he spends with her. She appreciates him so much when he frees up and hour of his day for her.

Me:
(lets be honest, this is how I look 99% of the time!)

Oh man. Where do I start!? Ellie has been in our family for over a month now and I think we are in a routine. Well, at least we manage during the day. Between doing a load of laundry practically everyday, feeding Ellie ever 2-3 hours, and entertaining Brinley endlessly, I am busy. BUSY. Sometimes I want to pull my hair out, but other times when the house is quiet and both girls are napping, I tell myself, "I can do this! I AM doing this! Go me!" hahaha but seriously, sometimes you need to give yourself a pat on the back for just making it through the hour without any meltdowns.

My body is continuing to recover. Thankfully, my milk supply is regulating itself and I rarely have moments of engorgement. When I do, it is usually because Ellie is sleeping over 4 hours at night and I wake up before she does to pump. Speaking of pumping, we are running out of freezer space! I am pumping everyday (usually) and store 4-6oz. I'm not pumping to use exclusively, but I am pumping because I need to! For whatever reason (tmi, stop reading Dad), my right side over produces. I pump that side and usually get 5-6oz. It is incredible to see. Why I didn't have an electric pump with Brinley blows my mind and really depresses me sometimes. I could have saved myself SO MANY tears and anxiety and stress!!! Ahhh, well, your first baby is a tester baby anyways :-) Nobody has a clue what they're doing the first time around! My c-section incision feels great and the bleeding has basically stopped. I have my 6 week appointment the Monday before Thanksgiving, so that will be exciting to check off! It has been 6 weeks already? whaattt??

I have to say, I could not have made it through this baby #2 transition without my wonderful friends here. I am so overwhelmed sometimes with the wonderful women that surround me. We are always finding a way to get together (without kids!) and laugh and hang. Our recent find is going to Chili's because they don't close until late!! Wooo!!! We have befriended one of the waiters and he always takes care of us! We have so much fun and I feel like myself again. I haven't laughed this hard in years and I am so grateful for them. You know who you are ladies!

I am definitely looking forward to the holidays to be with family. We haven't been back to Charlotte since last New Years (here, here and here) and I miss it tremendously. We love that city and hope to end up there someday. We leave for Charlotte next Tuesday for Thanksgiving and we'll see how that drive goes with a 6 week old baby....ummm...stop stressing prematurely, Meagan! I'm sure it will go fine, but I can't help but have a slight anxiety attack just thinking about it! We will be the first house guests in my in-laws new house! We are excited to spend time with them and also see my parents. We are all doing Thanksgiving dinner together! I am excited! My parents and Ryan's parents get along great so we are so happy and relieved to have them both in the same city. It will make our 8 hour drives to Charlotte all the more exciting and rewarding!

Life is always busy and always crazy, but we are a happy little family. I am doing my best staying on top of my scripture study and "alone quiet time" to recharge my spirit. It is hard to find those moments, but when I do, it is nice to turn off the social networking and read some inspiring General Conference talks.
Brinley keeps me laughing and Ellie keeps me lactating, so what else can I say??

Ellie {one month!}

Miss Ellie is one month old!!!

she loved taking pictures...obviously!

I can't believe it!! She has changed so much in the past month! I just love this girl so much.

She is sleeping longer stretches at night (sometimes...), staying awake for longer periods of times during the day, not immediately falling asleep after starting to nurse, her eyes are brighter and more open, she is bearing more weight on her legs when we stand her up, loves to make eye contact with us and look at our faces, she loves to watch me walk around and will move her head back if I walk behind her, loves it when Brinley kisses her face, and yesterday, she started cooing at me for a minute. This girl has stolen all our hearts. We love her so much!

My favorite things about Ellie:
Her neck rolls
Her changing eye color, we think we have another blue eyed baby!
Her laughs and whimper cries in her sleep
Baby feet. Yes please!
Her hair! It's ridiculous, we know!
The stork bite on her left eyelid
Her baby acne
Her old man toots and monstrous size burps

Ellie's favorite things (from what I can tell):
Mamas milk. Yuuuuummmmmm. She nurses every 3 hrs almost on the hour. Clock work baby.
Sleeping
Being swaddled
Being held super tightly
Kisses from Brinley
Her NUK binkies
Always having a dry diaper

We went to the doctor today for her one month and these are her stats!
weight: 11.2 oz
height: 21 1/2 inches

Enjoy these pictures from the last month!

you can really notice her red top here.

I left Ellie here to fill up my water bottle (for the 9 millionth time...nursing!), and I came back to find Brinley with her arm around Ellie. I died.

Baby stretches are the best!
