Over the summer, I enrolled Brinley in a week-to-week dance class that offered a 45 minute class without the registration and commitment for doing an end of the year performance. It was a good chance to get exposure and to see if she even liked dance before forking out the big bucks.
She looked like a real ballerina.
so cute, right?
After the first class, she never really talked about ballet and dance during the week, and she stopped asking "is dance class today? or one more sleep?" And I knew it was time to possible switch avenues when she continued to make up excuses to not go to dance class. When my kid starts making up excuses and saying "mommy, I'll sit in time-out instead of going to dance." Yikes! And what was weird is I felt like the dance studio we were at was SO INTENSE. Nutcracker blah blah blah, and the moms one-upping each other when talking about their daughters. I'm all for being proud of your child, but to the point when you're beating a dead horse, just stop! It also bothered me that I couldn't actually be in the studio to watch her dance. Instead, the parents watched from a waiting room on a video monitor screen. Not my scene.
Its no joke that Brinley is beyond flexible. Flexibility doesn't mean that she is automatically gifted in gymnastics, but it definitely doesn't hurt! So the following week I signed her up for the YMCA gymnastics class. and it was expensive! One day a week for an hour for 9 weeks.
We had her first class this week and she loved it. She looked like a natural out there. I could not believe my eyes! I mean, I know she's my daughter and all, ha ha ha, but it is just so nice to see her enjoy her time and be excited the entire way through. The teacher even talked about moving her up a level already because she was so ahead of the other kids in her class.
I asked my friends on Facebook to share their experiences with gymnastics growing up and when to call it quits. After lots of great advice (seriously you guys rock!), and talking it out with Ryan, we've decided to keep doing the once a week class for now and see how she likes it after the 9 week session. Jumping to two days is a lot! and more expensive. If she wants to do two days during the next session, then we will sign her up, but for right now I am happy seeing her excited and happy.
